En torno un tercio de los pacientes con infección por el VIH desconocen su estado serológico de VIH. Hasta el 50% de los pacientes con infección por el VIH en el momento del diagnóstico presentan un recuento de CD4 inferior a 350 células/μl. El diagnóstico precoz permite el inicio temprano de la terapia antirretrovírica, disminuyendo la comorbilidad y previniendo la aparición de nuevos casos. Se recomienda descartar la infección por el VIH en toda persona con sintomatología sugerente y realizar oferta dirigida o bien oferta rutinaria para screening en población asintomática.

Around a third of patients with HIV infection are unaware of their HIV serological status. Up to 50% of HIV-infected patients at time of diagnosis have a CD4 count below 350 cells/mcl. Early diagnosis enables prompt antiretroviral treatment, reduces comorbidities and prevents new cases. HIV should be ruled out in everybody with symptoms that are suggestive of the infection, and the asymptomatic population should be offered routine or targeted screening.
