Abstract

Asthenia is a common symptom in autoimmune diseases. It is sometimes related with the disease activity, but it can also indicate chronic organ damage (such as kidney disease in a patient with lupus) or even the occurrence of other pathologies (for example, an infection or a secondary drug effect). That is why it is essential to assess these patients thoroughly, ruling out other causes of asthenia and ordering complementary tests when needed based on the diagnostic suspicion. Psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression are prognostic factors of asthenia in these patients. Treatment has to be individualised according to the cause of the asthenia. In all the cases, an increase in physical activity must be required, and disease activity has to be monitored if it is active. Biological drugs have proven beneficial in some cases.
