Abstract

Pulmonary involvement is very frequent in systemic autoimmune diseases. It can affect any part of the respiratory system, from the airways, lung parenchyma and the pleura up to the ribcage. Each of the diseases is affected in a different way. Pulmonary involvement can lead to high morbidity and mortality, so if it is suspected, a study should begin with a thorough clinical history and physical examination, chest x-ray, respiratory function testing and echocardiogram. Depending on the results, further testing may be required. The suspicion of pulmonary involvement and its early diagnosis are important, as is the initial management.
