Abstract
Introduction

Thyroid dysfunction is a common condition in the elderly.

Pathogenesis

In the aging process there are changes in secretion, metabolism and action of thyroid hormones. Thyroid function tests could be difficult to interpret because of aging related changes in the thyroid.

Manifestations

Hypothyroidism symptoms such as fatigue, constipation or dry skin can mimic the typical changes during aging. The clinical manifestations of hyperthyroidism in the elderly are milder than in middle-aged people. The different types of thyroid cancer and nodules are usually associated with more aggressive forms of the disease.

Management

In order to minimize the morbidity associated with thyroid dysfunction in the elderly it is essential to establish the appropriate treatment that should be tailored to an accurate diagnosis and appropriate monitoring.
