Abstract

The treatment of choice in pulmonary embolism (PE) is anticoagulation both in the acute phase and long-term, provided that there are no contraindications. A differentiation must be made in this type of treatment between parenteral anticoagulation and oral anticoagulation (vitamin K antagonists or direct-action oral anticoagulants). In long-term treatment, the decision to maintain anticoagulant treatment indefinitely will depend on different factors such as risk of bleeding or recurrence as well as the patient's preferences. However, there are certain special situations in which the decision of what anticoagulant to use is different than the rest of the general population.
