La familia Herpesviridae incluye 9 tipos patógenos para los seres humanos, pertenecientes a tres subfamilias. Los α-herpesvirus (herpes simplex 1 y 2, varicela zóster y virus del herpes B); los β-herpesvirus (citomegalovirus, virus del herpes humano 6 y virus del herpes humano 7) y los γ-herpesvirus (virus de Epstein-Barr y virus del herpes humano 8). Todos los herpesvirus tienen en común su habilidad para establecer latencia y reactivarse ante situaciones de inmunosupresión. La primoinfección por herpes simple 1 y 2 se sigue por latencia en ganglios nerviosos regionales y por reactivaciones periódicas, de morbilidad menor que la infección original. La primoinfección por el virus de la varicela zóster es responsable de la varicela, mientras que las reactivaciones se manifiestan como zóster. La infección por herpes virus tipo 6A da lu- gar a encefalitis en adultos y la de herpes tipo 6B a exantema súbito en niños. El herpes virus tipo 8 se asocia al sarcoma de Kaposi, enfermedad de Castleman multicéntrica y linfoma de cavidades.

The Herpesviridae family includes nine subtypes that are pathogenic in human beings. They belong to three subfamilies: α-herpesvirus (herpes simplex 1 and 2, varicella zoster, and herpes B virus); β-herpesvirus (cytomegalovirus, human herpesvirus 6, and human herpesvirus 7), and γ-herpesvirus (Epstein-Barr virus and human herpesvirus 8). All herpesviruses have in common the ability to establish latency and reactive in situations of immunosuppression. Primary herpes simplex 1 and 2 infection remains latent in regional nerve ganglions and has periodic reactivations. It has a lower morbidity than the original infection. The primary varicella zoster virus infection is responsible for varicella whereas the reactivations manifest as shingles. Herpesvirus type 6A gives rise to encephalitis in adults and herpesvirus type 6B gives rise to sudden exanthem in children. Herpesvirus type 8 is associated with Kaposi's sarcoma, multicentric Castleman disease, and body cavity lymphoma.
