Abstract

Asthma is a prevalent disease affecting both children and adults, its incidence is increasing, appearing, in most cases, before 5-6 years-old. It is characterized by acute episodes of dyspnea with wheezing that can alternate with asymptomatic or sporadic coughing and wheezing periods. In childhood, familial atopic predisposition allergy is the most common etiology. Rarely, asthma in children is causing exclusively by exercise or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Pathogenic factors are: bronchial hyperresponsiveness and bronchial epithelial cells airway inflammation. Differential diagnosis should be taken into account in all cases. Diagnosis and severity degree classification rely on the anamnesis, allergological study (skin tests, IgE, molecular analysis) and the respiratory function tests (spirometry, broncholability and exhaled nitric oxide).
