Abstract

Anemia is a common disorder in the population whose etiology varies depending on age, sex, and even race. Some initial parameters, such as reticulocytes, help distinguish between anemia of central origin (decreased production) or peripheral origin (destruction or bleeding) as do the size of the red blood cells (microcytic, normocytic, or macrocytic anemia). Then, the study is continued in order to reach a diagnosis and start treatment. Aplastic anemia is a rare hematologic disorder characterized by immune suppression of the bone marrow. Its etiology is still not well understood, although predisposing genetic factors have become known in addition to others that could affect its subsequent progression. Treatment is also evolving, with notable improvements in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is a clonal disorder characterized by intravascular hemolysis that is closely related to bone marrow aplasia. New complement inhibitors, an evolution in treatment, have the potential to further improve outcomes in this population.
