Abstract

The transthoracic echocardiogram is the essential diagnostic tool in aortic valve disease, and often requires a multimodal approach for a complete assessment. The treatment of choice for aortic stenosis is surgical valve replacement, indicated in the presence of symptoms or left ventricular dysfunction resulting from the stenosis. There have been major advances in recent years in the field of percutaneous intervention, and therefore the treatment paradigm and prognosis of these patients has changed substantially. On other hand, aortic regurgitation should be treated in the presence of symptoms, left ventricular dilatation or dysfunction resulting from aortic regurgitation or significant aortic dilatation. Surgery is the treatment of choice, prioritising valve repair procedures over replacement when technically feasible.
