Abstract
Background

Nonsurgical interventionist techniques represent a therapeutic revolution for many cardiovascular diseases. In the field of valvular heart disease, severe aortic stenosis can be treated successfully through transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Severe mitral regurgitation can be treated with the MitraClip percutaneous device to repair the mitral valve.

Indications for TAVI

TAVI is considered the treatment of choice for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis in inoperable patients or those with very high surgical risk. TAVI is also an alternative to surgery, with comparable results in patients with intermediate to high surgical risk. It is predicted that the indications for TAVI will be expanded to low-risk patients in the future.

Indications for MitraClip

MitraClip implantation is considered an alternative to surgery for patients with primary mitral regurgitation and high surgical risk or who are inoperable, and who have favourable anatomy for percutaneous repair. MitraClip is also considered a therapeutic option for patients with severe secondary mitral regurgitation and persistent symptoms despite optimal medical treatment.
