Abstract

Vulnerability to infection, disease progression, and clinical manifestations of tuberculosis (TB) are closely linked to the immune status of the host. This status is mainly influenced by age, the presence of comorbidities, and other factors that are still poorly defined. In Spain, most new cases of TB originate from the reactivation of a latent infection, a phenomenon favored by aging, associated diseases, and the use of immunosuppressive therapies. In this context, the treatment approach to TB is complex, since tolerance to treatment is usually worse, with a higher risk of toxicity and possible interactions with other drugs administered concomitantly. Therefore, it is essential to assess the need to adjust the usual concomitant medication, the antituberculosis regimen, and its dosage. In addition, these patients usually require closer monitoring in the outpatient setting.
