Abstract

Microbiological analysis of body fluids (cerebrospinal, pleural, peritoneal, synovial, pericardial, and amniotic fluids) is essential in the diagnosis of potentially serious infections. It is essential to collect them using sterile techniques and before beginning antimicrobial treatment. Immediate transportation of the samples is essential to ensure the viability of certain microorganisms, especially cerebrospinal fluid. Interpreting the results of the different studies should be done with caution, relating the results to the patient's clinical picture. Each fluid has a different etiology that guides empirical treatment. Molecular techniques have been a great advance, allowing for faster and more sensitive detection, but they should be interpreted with caution due to their limitations and high cost.
