Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a growing problem worldwide and are not uncommon among international travelers, who may contribute to the spread of resistant strains. When treating an STI in an international traveler, it is important to carefully consider the epidemiology of the area visited and the mode of transmission, as these factors can influence the choice of empirical antibiotic therapy. Preventing STIs should begin with pre-travel counseling. During the post-travel consultation, practitioners must consider not only STIs but also infections that can be transmitted sexually that are less common in the home setting. It is essential to have a map of STI resistance to first-line antibiotics when deciding on treatment and to be familiar with parasitic infections that can be transmitted sexually.
